Meet "Jane Austen”
Sunday 21st September

Jane Austen fans are celebrating the 250th anniversary of her birth in 2025, and Bewdley Museum have recruited well known historian Lesley Smith to play Jane on Sunday 21st at the museum. Lesley has been a regular fixture of the very successful Bewdley Festival each year for over 10 years. She has very recently appeared in three Channel 5 history programmes as an expert as well as making 96 appearances in the UK across 2025 as various famous women from British History.
Usually, as in the festival, Lesley makes a speech in character but for Bewdley Museum she will be in full costume and reading from various of Jane Austen’s works and giving brief talks on Jane Austen’s life, so visitors can come and here a little about this brilliant woman’s life. As well as Jane Austen there are other Georgian characters to be found at the museum, with musicians playing music of the period in the afternoons to give a really vibrant flavour to these Georgian festivities.
Said Lesley Smith, "I really have rather a passion about Bewdley, and find the people of the area always kind and welcoming. It will be a great pleasure to be in the town again and see some of the people who know me well. I have spoken a number of times to the Jane Austen Society as famous women but never as Jane Austen. Fortunately, my mother-in-law studied English at Oxford University and specialised in Jane Austen so I have scholarly assistance in finding the character of the author.”
