In association with Severn Valley Railway
Suitability - All age groups
The Home Front Workshops take a very practical look at life, hardship and disruption during the dark days of World War II. The experience is arranged jointly by Bewdley Museum and the Severn Valley Railway.
The day begins at Kidderminster Severn Valley Railway station where your group will board the Heritage steam train, and travel from the ‘City’ in to the ‘Countryside’ via a short train ride to Bewdley Station. Here you will be greeted by a costumed member of staff from Bewdley Museum who will guide you through the day’s activities and set the scene.
After a short walk to Bewdley Museum, children will learn about issues such as preparations for war, air raids and the black-out. During this session there will be an opportunity to visit a genuine 1940s Air Raid Shelter and to handle a range of artefacts from the 1940s era. After lunch in the Education room, children will learn about rationing and will have the chance to play with toys which were popular during wartime.
This programme’s timetable is particularly suitable for schools who may have a longer journey home.
At the end of the experience your group will be collected by coach from Bewdley town centre rather than travelling back by train to Kidderminster at a later time.
A single train journey from Kidderminster to Bewdley, practical classroom sessions at Bewdley Museum, all with a costumed museum teacher who will lead the whole day for you. Free Identity cards and evacuee labels are provided.
