River & Rail Experience

In association with Severn Valley Railway

Suitability - All age groups

The bustling Georgian town of Bewdley has long been a favourite for visitors of all ages with its collection of delightful buildings, secret pathways, alleys and tranquil gardens in unexpected locations.

Bewdley provides an ideal opportunity for schools and groups to explore the history of this ancient river crossing, learn about some of its fine buildings, and industrial past. The local archaeology, geology and  industrial heritage  is outstanding.

Following your initial train journey to Bewdley (from Bridgnorth or Kidderminster) you will be welcomed by an education guide who will accompany your group throughout the day. Your group will cross the Thomas Telford’ bridge spanning the River Severn to the town’s museum.

Your pre-selected topics will then be presented to your pupils/students via activity sessions, presentations and discussions.

Many activities will involve walking through  the Georgian Town in order to fully utilise the natural environment. Walking shoes and all weather gear is essential for this visit. Select from the following:

  • River Severn
  • Coracle Making
  • Severn Floods
  • Industrial Heritage
  • Materials

Your packed lunches can be eaten in the Education  Room or on a fine day, can be taken in the beautiful Jubilee Gardens which are adjacent to the Museum.

At the end of your day your group will return to Bewdley station for the train journey back to Kidderminster or Bridgnorth.
